Our greatest successes in life often lie in helping others succeed and realize their true potential.’
This approach may not be widely popular in the current competitive world scenario. Still, according to Dr. Laurie Mintz, life is an infinite-sized pie, and it’s essential to support and cheer one another’s successes and joys.
Dr. Laurie is a successful psychologist, therapist, and best-selling author who is making tireless efforts to empower others around the psychology of sexuality. She translates academic work for the lay public with the overall goal to enhance individual, cultural, sexual, and overall wellness through the provision of scientifically sound information. Her unique insights on sex-positive scientific findings have changed the lives of thousands who follow her on social media.
Hailing from Buffalo, New York, Dr. Laurie belonged to a progressive family. Sharing deets about her early life, she says, “ My parents emphasized education and were very loving. My mother was unusually sex-positive! I wanted to be an actress, although not one who sings because I am truly tone deaf! But my mom said “no” and said that I needed to get a degree in which I could support myself.” For Dr. Laurie, that degree turned out to be Psychology, and today, she is a tenured Professor at the University of Florida.
Dr. Laurie teaches ‘Psychology of Human Sexuality’ to hundreds of undergraduate students each year. She also teaches and mentors graduate students in both their clinical and research training, helping them to find their own niche as psychologists.“ I got a degree in psychology, and it’s been a great career for me; I love the field. In the last ten years, via teaching a large enrollment class and giving talks all over the country and internationally, I feel I have been able to marry my desire for acting, performing, and education. I consider what I do to be “edutainment.”
After undergoing an existential crisis, Dr. Laurie decided to expand her horizons and began writing for the lay public as publishing for academics did not fulfill her ultimate goals. She had an innate desire to connect to a different audience, not academics but regular people struggling to enhance their lives, and ventured into authoring self-help and empowering books.
Aside from teaching, Dr. Laurie started speaking to the lay public, breaking down the complexities of human psychology and narrating it in an easy-to-digest and absorbable way. An expert on the psychology of sexuality, she has earned a lot of respect as a speaker and has the privilege of giving a TEDx talk which has sparked a new sexual revolution. You can watch it here.
Today, along with being an accomplished psychologist, she is a highly sought-after speaker and best-selling author of Becoming Cliterate: Why Orgasm Equality Matters and How to Get It and A Tired Woman’s Guide to Passionate Sex: Reclaim Your Desire and Reignite Your Relationship.
